A flow–volume loop plotted the way a lung-function report prints it: volume increases to the right, expiratory flow is drawn above the axis and inspiratory flow below it. The loop is traced once and then changes shape while the axes stay still, so what you see is the shape changing rather than the chart rescaling. It starts as normal: forced vital capacity 4.50 litres, peak expiratory flow 9.5 litres per second reached after 12 per cent of the exhaled volume, peak inspiratory flow 7.0 litres per second, and an expiratory limb that is essentially straight from the peak down to residual volume. It becomes obstructive: forced vital capacity 3.60 litres, peak expiratory flow 5.2 litres per second reached after 10 per cent of the exhaled volume, peak inspiratory flow 6.0 litres per second, and an expiratory limb that is concave towards the volume axis, scooped by 68 per cent of the straight line between the peak and residual volume. The expiratory limb is the half that carries the reading. Above the peak it is effort-dependent; below the peak it is not, so its shape is a property of the airways rather than of how hard the patient blew. The scoop is the finding: flow falls away faster than volume, because small airways close during the manoeuvre rather than staying open to the end of it.
